So where did these “Ten
Commandments,” come from and how did we get them? They are more
accurately known as the “Dialogue of Moses.” Many years ago,
there was a very special man. His name was Moses and he had an
outstanding sensitivity to the Presence of God. One day he
took a walk into the mountains where he noticed a bush that was on
fire but was not being consumed or destroyed. Now this was surely a
very curious thing and so Moses just had to take a closer look at
that strange bush. He climbed up the mountain so that he could find
out what was up with this bush. The mountain was the famous
Mt. Sinai you've heard so much about. What? You haven't heard about
this famous mountain? You can read all about it in the Holy Bible.
It's all there in Book of Exodus, Chapter 3. When Moses climbed up
Mt. Sinai to get a better look at that strange burning bush he found
that his eyes did not deceive him. That bush sat there and was on
fire but no harm came to it! Moses really wanted to understand that
burning bush, so he just kept staring at it. Now, God, seeing that
Moses was getting close the the place where the bush was, called out
to Moses. He heard the Voice of God calling him by name and he
answered, "Here I am!"
God warned Moses that the ground he
was approaching was very Holy and he needed to remove his shoes out
of respect.
Now that God had Moses' undivided
attention, He told Moses of a plan that would lead the people of
Israel to freedom. God commanded Moses to go to the people and
say "I Am sent me. That is my name for all
generations."
Now, the
people of Israel had been in slavery for a very long time and now it
was time for Moses to lead them out of bondage to freedom. Moses
obeyed God's command. He rounded up all the Hebrew people and led
them out of Egypt. God was always with them on the entire trip
because Moses obeyed the command of the Lord God. The Presence of God
took care of them on the longest journey in history. God's love
protected the people and the people loved loved God.
Now, Moses
liked to climb that mountain when he wanted to get get away from the
confusion and get clear instructions from God. He went up into Mt.
Sinai where God gave him ten very special laws that would protect
and preserve the people if they would listen and obey. God was
very clear, saying, "These are My commandments which everyone
is to follow." The laws were given to Moses on on two stone
tablets which Moses carried down to the people.
Now, this
does not that the people had an easy time after that. They ran into
all kinds of trouble along the way in their travels, not because
God's ten commands didn't work, but because the people didn't always
work with God's Law!.
We are just
like those Hebrew people of so many years ago. The Truth of God's
Law is Absolute. Who, but God is a greater authority on the Law?
After all, God is the Author! Still, we sometimes get to thinking
we're very smart and we know everything, so we toss those ten
commands aside and convince ourselves that they don't matter and we
can get along without them. Yet, that's just when our troubles start
and we begin to struggle alone as we try to push contrary to
Absolute Law. It can't be done and no one has ever succeeded for
very long without obedience to the Nobel Ten.
Now
you know the credits. God gave a gift to His people through an
obedient servant, Moses. Go back, now, and take a look at the Noble
Ten, the "Ten Commandments" given to us through Moses, by
God.
